Fahrenheit 911… Uncut?
I took the day off work today; we have a Kiwi friend from New Zealand in town and Jamaica’s mom is arriving tomorrow. I mentioned the idea of seeing the new Michael Moore film, Fahrenheit 911, and was vetoed immediately. “I am not seeing that movie!” were the words from my open-minded, culturally relevant, politically astute wife. My intention, I assured her, was not to go Bush-bashing with the rest of the moviegoers, but to be aware of what is being suggested or propagated so that our response to it will be informed; not fed from right wing talk show hosts or people who wear swastikas.
We went to the movie.
I laughed, I seethed, I cringed. The audience did too, but usually at the moments I didn’t. After seeing Moore’s last movie, Bowling for Columbine, I loved the type of movie it was and looked forward to more engaging, edgy, controversial and opinionated films wrapped in this docu-movie-entary style. For all the credibility Moore gained from Columbine, he lost it with 911. This movie took “out of context” to entirely new levels, and raised audience stupidity levels right along with it. While I doubt the DVD version will include un-cut portions of the film, I am convinced that if an audience were to see their responses played back with all the moments of Bush in context, we would have red-faced moviegoers looking for the head of Michael Moore. But because we live in times of crooked trust in a political system that should be the epitome of straight, we eat-up President-bashing moments like it’s a new sport in the Olympics. How can we spend an evening fighting for parking spaces outside mega-malls lining up to pay $30 for a pair of movie tickets and popcorn, but we can’t write a letter or make a phone call to our local, state or federal government seeking the very change we mock? As a “united” nation, are we so hung up on the “divide” part that we forget what it means to “conquer?”
When will we realize that a President possesses the same shortcomings we do?
As for Michael Moore, as long as the truth is out there, I’m confident he’ll be miles from it as he so masterfully displayed on 911.
