Fail Faster
Growing up, my education path was not typical. I dabbled in all of it: public school, private school, home school, no school, college at 18 and college at 26. I finished high school when I was 16; not because I was smart but because I was bored. It was the entrepreneur in me that kept me motivated to learn and keep figuring things out.
In a meeting with my team earlier this week, we were working through ideas for overcoming some significant obstacles in front of us. It's amazing how easy it is to over-process and over-think so many options. How many times have you had a meeting about a meeting to discuss a meeting's meeting?
One antidote I've learned along the way—and I think it comes from my atypical learning path—is to fail faster. The sooner I learn what doesn't work, the sooner I'll stumble upon what does work.
The guys at 37signals are a great example of this philosophy in action. They don't tinker around with products until everything is perfect. They get it out there an innovate along the way.
I'll admit, this approach doesn't make life easier nor is it a path to take if you have problems in the humility department, but failing faster sure does set you up for more successes.
This failing faster approach is not an excuse to avoid learning from others or adopting what's already working out there. Rather, it's an attempt at creating a fail-safe in the absence of overwhelming clarity.

Office Party at the Office
I have a great team at Foursquare. Their creativity never ceases to amaze me, and yesterday was no exception. Our associate editor (Marcia) and web project manager (Geoff) are getting married next month. They met before they started working here and it's been exciting for all of us to see their relationship evolve over the past year.
Because many of us on the Comm team are fans of The Office, we decided to put together a little Office-themed party for Geoff and Marcia. After we donned the character of our Office counterpart, we shared a meal, played a little Office trivia and concluded with a video that says it all.
Go team!

Bastards, Series and Speaking
For the past year or so I've been researching and writing about the topic of identity and soul, and why that matters for individuals and organizations. It's been a fascinating journey, especially since so much of what I do revolves around this topic. For example, at Personality, our whole profiling process is built around the ability to understand who an organization is and what to do as a result of that knowledge.
This issue of identity is also a significant pursuit at Foursquare because without a shared understanding of who we are, tribes are difficult to keep together or sustain.
A good chunk of my studying has stemmed from the book The Soul of the Corporation by Hamid Bouchikhi and John R. Kimberly. I reviewed this on the Personality blog.
I also wrote a 4-part series for Church Marketing Sucks that has resulted in a lot of good feedback--both in the comments section and directly to me via email. You can read Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4.
For my keynote during the Echo conference later this month in Dallas, I'm looking forward to sharing the "live" presentation of this series, including some great videos to drive home the point.

Foursquare Convention 2008
Jamaica and I arrived in Houston yesterday for the annual Foursquare Convention. We're here for eight days, mostly because of all the pre-convention logistics to work through. So while Jamaica gets some focused study time for her upcoming LSAT, I'm swirling in event minutiae. There are just over 3,000 people registered and we'll have close to 3,500 in total attendance.
A few things I am anticipating...
- The Monday night opening is going to be quite dramatic. We've partnered with the local arts district here in Houston and several singers/actors are helping out.
- Houston Mayor Bill White is bringing greetings Monday night.
- Israel & New Breed are live Tuesday night--almost 20 people in their crew!
- Mr. Smiley (a.k.a. Joel Osteen) shot a video greeting that we're rolling on Monday night.
- Kirbyjon Caldwell--of recent Bush wedding fame--is speaking Thursday night.
- We've got a special guest from NASA sharing on Wednesday night.
- The Foursquare national leader from Myanmar (Burma) in town. He'll share updates on Monday.
- We're debuting a new video on Thursday night about Foursquare that people are going to love.
I'm grateful for the hundreds of volunteers that have gathered together from Foursquare churches in the Houston area to help pull this thing off. And special props, as always, to the core convention crew: Steve Cauble, Mitchie Sarmiento, Mike Fullerton and the rest of my team for making the journey enjoyable.
Here we go!

Asking the Right Questions
It seems that I've been spending a lot of time lately building teams, especially as my spheres of responsibility continue to expand. I was in a meeting today with the dean of admissions at USC--I'm considering their EMBA program--and he asked me how I build great teams. Finding the right people and building good teams has always been an instinctual and intuitive process for me. I've blogged a little about hiring before, but there is a lot I still need to learn.
One thing I am learning is what questions to ask. Some of those include:
- What books have you read that you would consider to be a key part of shaping who you are (personally and professionally)?
- What websites, blogs and magazines do you read regularly to keep you at the top of your game?
- What else do you do to keep you at the top of your game?
- If you could write a book, what would you write about and why?
- What do you look for in a good team? How would you go about building that "good" team?
- What do you look for in a good manager/supervisor?
- What should a supervisor/manager know about you to keep you performing at your best?
- How do you react when your good ideas don't seem to be going anywhere?
- Describe a write-home-to-momma moment--something that you have been responsible for that you are really proud of.
- Describe a moment you don't want anybody to know about--something that you have been responsible for that you're not so proud of.

Personality Confidence Evaluation Tool
Last week on the Personality blog we announced that we had been developing a tool that measured how confident an organization is in their communication. Earlier this week we rolled it out to our Think subscribers, and then today we made it public on the Personality site.
Aside from this being an obvious way to tickle the ears of new business prospects, I feel really good about how this has turned out and the potential help it can be to organizations that struggle with these issues. In our early tests and from feedback we've seen this week, people really appreciate the accuracy of the results. For those that submit their results to us, we take it a step further and send them an 11-page PDF called The Confidence Factor. It breaks down the Confidence Evaluation score and gives practical ideas on how to move your business from stuck to stellar.
Props to the Personality team for doing such a great job with this!

Free, CFCC Job & Freelance Labs
It was about a year ago when CFCC announced the new Job Lab and Freelance Lab. Both sites were originally launched with the idea that someday they could generate a little revenue to help keep the nonprofit CFCC going.
The CFCC team has instead decided to keep them free and lay aside previous plans to convert to a pay-per-post model.
I'm really grateful to Drew Goodmanson and his team at Ekklesia 360 for providing all of the back-end technical design and programming for both sites.
I continue to be humbled by the impact CFCC is having with churches and church leaders around the world. A little idea four years ago has certainly grown into something well beyond what I could have ever dreamed of. Go God.

Foursquare Live! Worship Training Event
If you've followed any of my Twitter feed over the past several weeks you've read increasing references to the live simulcast event I've been working on with Foursquare. Today is when all of that hard work comes together for the broadcast crescendo live to hundreds of locations across the country.
It's been a treat to work with the front-man for today's event, Tommy Walker. Tommy is also the worship leader at the church I'm a part of in Eagle Rock, Calif. He has done a great job crafting the content for this worship training event. Jack Hayford and Darlene Zschech are also participating in today's simulcast but their portions were pre-recorded due to schedule conflicts (Jack is in Israel today and Darlene is in Australia).
One of the biggest components to this event has been the simultaneous production of a Spanish counterpart at the same time as the English version. It's like producing two events at the same time.
If I wore a hat, it would go off to Michael Melahouris, Dan Phelps and Steve Galvan who have worked around the clock pulling the technical details together that will work in concert with today's broadcast. Michael, Dan and Steve serve with me on the Foursquare Communications team.

This Week's A Wrap
Jamaica and I arrived back from Haiti (via Miami) last Saturday. The very next day I went to Long Beach to begin a week-long series of Foursquare meetings with the board of directors, supervisors and superintendents. I wish I would have put a little more assimilation time between being with my hungry Haitian friends and my "fat" Foursquare friends. And to top it off, Jamaica and I ended up with some viral infection that has kept us sick ever since we got back. This week wasn't easy!
When I returned home last night I was able to put together a quick video re-cap of our Haiti trip.
I went to the office this morning for a meeting with Jack Hayford and Tommy Walker. We worked through some of the details for an April 5 Foursquare Live! event that features both of them. Tommy has a new album coming out in March.

Live From the Foursquare NextGen Summit
Jamaica and I finished up Christmastime with her family yesterday afternoon, and then made our way to Anaheim and checked in at the Hilton last night. We're here through January 1 for the Foursquare NextGen Summit. My role at Foursquare made way for me to be a part of the core planning team over the past 18 months. My Communication's team played a key role in all of the marketing and promotions leading up to the event. What a ride! Denominational marketing is a different animal, and they don't follow the typical rules, especially for events. Maybe I should write a book on this some day.
Aside from the fact that attendance is below what we were aiming for by about half (we're 10% away from break-even), everything else is coming together quite nicely. Seeing the dreams and ideas become reality for this has been a real treat. There are a handful of people that deserve a standing ovation: James Craft, Angela Ventura, Mitchie Sarmiento, Steve Cauble, Dave Hanley, Jena Iwata, and the dozens of people who worked so hard to make this event happen. Well done friends!

Jack Black
Earlier this week in a Foursquare exec team meeting, we got to catch a rare moment with Jack Hayford and his new BlackBerry. He tried one out years ago but it never caught on. This time he was really excited about it. When he held it up for everybody to see, I took out my iPhone and said we should get a picture of it. He suggested that he strike a pose so he held the BlackBerry at arm's length and appeared to type with his right hand. When someone else in the room implied he was a novice because real users type with two thumbs, Jack shot back quickly, "I was using it as a phone." Ha!
We'll see if this newer, smaller, more robust BlackBerry fits Jack this time.

Personality Christmas 2007
Last night was the annual Personality Christmas party. We started the evening with dinner at the swanky Nick & Stef's steakhouse and then walked three blocks to the Walt Disney Concert Hall for the Handel's Messiah Sing-Along. I've got to say that last night's concert was much more appreciated than the Organ Spectacular I attended a few days prior. Handel's Messiah is amazing. Two thoughts kept occuring to me throughout the evening: 1) Does this audience of 2,000+ really understand what they're singing? And 2) I wonder why Handel's Messiah isn't experienced more during Easter?
The evening with the Personality team was grand. I really like working with these guys!

Comm Christmas 2007
![]()
Jamaica and I had a great time this past Wednesday night with my Foursquare Communications team. Spouses and significant others joined up with us at the end of the work day and we made our way over to Roy's in downtown LA for dinner. We finished the night nine blocks away at the Walt Disney Concert Hall for a "holiday organ spectacular." It was my first time to the Disney hall--loved it!
One of the reocccuring themes this past year for me personally and for my Comm team has been the concept of inviting and pursuing others into our own life journey. So with each Christmas card I gave to my staff, I included a little poem I wrote that I think captures this concept. It was bundled with a Starbucks gift card.
Wise men followed
a starry sky,
Today some dream
of their Best Buy.What once,
was all about Thee,
Has now become
just another Wii.Gifts wrapped with love,
Given in the name of above.
Our presents have smothered
the presence of another.Enclosed is a simple
piece of plastic,
Pre-loaded with
a little fantastic.To be used–
not in isolation–
but with at least one other,
causing elation. So find a soul you know not,
perhaps know little,
Invite them to participate
in some intelligent drivel.Encourage,
Go on and inspire.
Laugh, smile,
Continue the choir.

Big Bear With Comm Team
Last Thursday and Friday I got to hang out with my Foursquare Communications team up in Big Bear, just 100 miles outside of Los Angeles. We do out-of-office things quite frequently, but this was the first time we did an overnight with the whole team.
Aside from a plethora of crazy delays and obstacles throughout the day on Thursday, it turned out to be a great time of bonding for the 13 of us. Our agenda was light, humor was flowing and the food was splendid. We talked a lot about our future and where we're going as a team. I appreciate moments like this because it inspires and motivates all of us.

Last week, Church Marketing Sucks posted its 1,000th entry. It's been a fun ride that last few years. Who would have ever thought a little idea could turn into so much? My thanks to Kevin the man Hendricks for being with me from the beginning. He has done much of the heavy lifting. Props also to Josh Cody. Josh began volunteering earlier this year and has gone above and beyond.
I am grateful to be surrounded by a talented team that really cares about helping churches communicate better.

Personality Weekend of Wow
This past Friday and Saturday were packed full of Personality highs and lows. For the last couple years, Personality has been going through some awkward growth spurts--much like any pre-teen might experience. We've been slowly growing out of our "childhood" design studio skin and learning how to fit in and get in to what we're good at and passionate about. The journey has been frustrating to say the least, including an identity crisis as we figure out who in the heck we really are.
I have been very transparent with the Personality team along the way because it obviously affects us all. Early this year, everyone knew that we would have to have some significant breakthroughs in new business if we were going to have a shot at the bright future we all signed up for.

MinistryCOM 2007
I'm sitting in the Nashville airport on my way back home to Los Angeles. I've been here for the last two days for the third annual MinistryCOM event with a little over 400 church communicators. This is my second year to speak a main session and the task was no less daunting. Nothing like being in front of some of the most "been there, done that" people on the planet--myself included!
I had a great time hanging with old and new friends. I was particularly encouraged by Kem Meyer and Shawn Wood. I love Kem's "relational" filter that frames everything she does and if you've never heard Shawn speak live, he just nails it.
Next week I'm in Grand Rapids for another speaking gig at the Internet Ministry Conference.

Now Hiring, Again
As the leader of two different teams for two different organizations, one of the things I always find myself doing--at least it feels like it--is looking for the right people to hire. From employee transitions to newly created roles, I am always on the hunt for the perfect catch and match. At present, there are 22 different people that I am responsible for across both of my teams at Personality and Foursquare, and I am down 5 people.
- Personality has been looking for an account director since May.
- Foursquare is looking to fill four different roles. I posted these at the CFCC Job Lab as well:
Production Manager, Digital Media
Project Manager, Print & Web
Administrative Assistant
Graphic Designer
If you or anybody you know might be a great fit for these, pass them my way. Thanks!

Foursquare Convention Israel
The Foursquare convention in Jerusalem just finished up today. This is my sixth convention and every year it seems like the load gets bigger and bigger. This year was no exception, especially considering we were in a foreign country and our normal crew was unavailable this year. I am grateful for the core team that was here because it took all hands on deck to make this happen.
Overall I feel pretty good for how things went from a logistical perspective. Feedback from some of the nearly 3,000 in attendance has all been positive. Being the perfectionist that I am, there were a few too many mistakes, mostly having to do with the load time for words on the screens.
It was a pleasure working with the local Israeli crew. The language and cultural barriers were frustrating at times, especially in moments of panic that are typical of running live events.
I am looking forward to winding down over the next week as Jamaica and I get to tour the country with the rest of the convention staff.

Israeli Customs, Continued
It turns out that the nightmare with customs was exactly that. We ended up getting our pallet just hours before the event began. The printed materials were for the opening night (we couldn't change it around because of a bylaw requirement that necessitated that these packets be distributed).
The re-printed materials that we had set in motion on Friday arrived at practically the same time that the pallet did! We had dozens of volunteers waiting and ready to assemble the packets--it was quite the fiasco!
Israeli customs ended up fining us big time for the shipment, claiming we had tried to sneak things through. They held back some of our stuff--including the box of electronics. That stuff is still held up in some shipping nether-world...

Nightmare With Customs
It was about a month ago that Cheryl Johnson (one of the Foursquare admin gurus on my team) began working on the logistics for shipping a pallet of stuff from Los Angeles to Jerusalem for our convention here this coming week. We had done everything we could to avoid shipping and customs hassles. I had already been to Israel several times to setup local contacts--including printers--for this very reason. Unfortunately, there were a handful of print jobs that were going to be cheaper to print in the U.S., and then ship to Jerusalem. No problem, we printed them with plenty of time to ship and arrive safely. A nice little savings of $10,000.
At the last minute before the shipment was set to go, one of the IT guys saw the pallet and asked if he could throw a small box of electronic things on so he could avoid carrying them with him on his flight. No big deal, throw it on.
Wait. Very big deal.

Shalom
I've been here for a week in Israel, and I have just a few more days to go before returning home to Los Angeles. After Chicago and New York and now Israel, it will be three weeks since I've slept in my own bed.
I was actually supposed to be here in Jerusalem for an additional week, but Foursquare president Jack Hayford cancelled his arrival which means I get to leave early. Hooray!
I've been here with Steve Cauble, convention production manager, and Mitchie Sarmiento, event planner--both work for Foursquare. The three of us have been working alongside Steve Dick (president), Dave Peterson (communications director) and Stephanie Dueck (marketing director) of Inspiration Cruises & Tours as we plan the big summer convention. Inspiration is handling all of the tour logistics like air, land, meals and lodging, and we're handling all of the convention-related stuff like program, production, promotions, sponsorships, back office and communications/IT. It's been a thrill to work with such a great group of people--we've definitely had our fair share of fun this past week as we navigate doing business in a different culture.
Half of the team left tonight and the rest of us leave tomorrow and Thursday. It will be a short shalom until we return for the main event in July with over 2,500 people.
But next time I get to bring Jamaica. Yeah baby.

Setting Objectives
I've been working with both of my teams lately on identifying objectives and developing plans to see them realized. I've always been a little afraid of setting objectives because it feels like you're limiting your scope. What happens if the handful of objectives you have don't allow room for a really good idea that comes up?
On the other hand, if I set objectives that are too broad, it is nearly impossible to ever see them realized because there is never real closure. I am learning the following when it comes to objectives:

Foursquare Communications Network
At the beginning of the century, Foursquare sold a radio station (KFSG) that we've had since the early 1900s. Our founder, Aimee Semple McPherson, started the station. It was a leading voice in the LA area for decades. The station sold to Spanish Broadcasting for record-breaking figures ($200+ million).
One of the commitments made during the sale of the station was to invest in future broadcast strategies that would extend beyond just a southern California footprint. It's been several years in the making, and the concept of a worldwide Foursquare Communications Network is starting to gain some steam.
What a thrill to be on the ground floor of something really, really huge. I look forward to the journey ahead.

Comm Team Strengths Day
Spent the day with my Foursquare Communications team. All 14 of us gathered at The Standard, a hipster hotel in downtown Los Angeles. I love taking my teams to different environments. In addition to getting minds outside of the typical work flow, it also exposes us to different ways of thinking, associating and creating.
Our primary agenda was to process some of the journey we've been on the last six weeks as I took the team through the book Now, Discover Your Strengths, by Marcus Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton. I did this same process with my Personality™ team back in July/August of last year.
The book is just plain phenomenal. If you haven't read it, you're missing out.
Things get really exciting for me when everyone lays their strengths out and we start to imagine how they intersect with each other. In the context of building a team, it is thrilling how everyone starts seeing ways they can work better together. Not only does it help me as a leader figure out ways to maximize individual strengths, it also helps me figure out how to get some people moved to other areas where their strengths are better used.
The result of our time today is a more focused team, re-organized around our strengths, that will make way for better collective output and individual fulfillment. Bam.

Goodbye Orlando, Until April
I'm sitting in the Orlando airport, awaiting the arrival of my last meeting before heading out tonight back to LA. Airport meetings are a pain, especially when the people meeting are on different airlines in different terminals with different security checkpoints. Doh!
Just finished up lunch with Cameron Strang (president of Relevant Media Group). Cameron and I met 10 years ago and haven't kept in touch much. It was good to get re-acquainted. I am particularly exited about some of the synergies that exist with Relevant and some of the stuff I am involved in like the Foursquare NextGen Summit (placeholder site) and Church Marketing Sucks. The conversation is just getting started!
Also had a very brief greeting/meeting with Bill Seaver, a blogger I've recently started paying attention to. Bill just joined the team at White Post Media, and has a real passion for seeing new media used strategically for churches and ministries.
It's been a long weekend with several great meetings. My workshop yesterday at NRB/Reach went well, but was poorly attended. I started to take it personal before I realized other presenters experienced similar sized crowds. Who wants to go to a workshop on Sunday afternoon in Orlando? I didn't think so.
I'm looking forward to getting back home tonight. Jamaica is coming down with some sort of cold so I better be there to prepare the hot tea and fumble through my feeble attempts at sympathy. Yes, I need help.
I'll be back here in Orlando in April for the National New Church Conference. And I don't have to speak on a Sunday for that one!

Orlando, NRB/Reach
I'm here in Orlando for the NRB/Reach conference, doing a workshop tomorrow afternoon. After being stranded in St. Louis last night from weather delays, the journey here took about as long as the time I'll be on the ground in Orlando.
Just returned from dinner at Maggiano's with Brad Hill and some of his team at SiteOrganic. Brad is helping with some of the workshops for NRB/Reach, and was the one who invited me here. Also at the dinner table was Jason Reynolds, web ministry coordinator at Stonebriar Community Church (Chuck Swindoll), as well as author and speaker Rex Miller. I really enjoyed the conversations with Rex and Jason--these guys know their stuff!
Prior to dinner I got to hang with Jay Kelly (Wired Parish) who has HDADD (high definition attention deficit disorder). Jay was so full of energy he made me feel like a sedated senior citizen in a coma. We really connected on a few ideas and, to use Jay's words, he's "all over it like a rat on a cheeto."
Also got to meet up this afternoon with Carolyn Haggard, the former media/pr powerhouse for New Life. She is one sharp woman, and has a huge future ahead of her. I really appreciate her heart for helping the church communicate better. Carolyn really gets it!

Real Reunion
When I was 16 years old I started a magazine called Real. It lasted a few years before everything blew up. From a lack of funding and being sued for millions of dollars, the reasons were plentiful and painful, and the lessons were priceless.
One of the things that came out of those rough moments was a handful of relationships that I am still connected with today. Not only did I meet the woman who would end up being my wife, I was also privileged to meet some others who played significant roles in Real magazine.
Two of these people, Shawn Stewart and Kevin Hendricks, have been working with me for the last three years. Shawn designed some early issues of Real and he is now the creative director for Personality™. Kevin was Mr. Writer Extraordinaire helping with the print and web version of Real. He is now a freelance writer who has done tons of stuff for Personality™, Foursquare, and CFCC, including the launch of Church Marketing Sucks in 2004.
I am ecstatic about the most recent addition from my "friends made during the Real days" club. Marcia Bartenhagen is joining my communications team at Foursquare and will be our associate editor. Marcia has spent the last several years at Strang Communications in Florida. She will be joining the Foursquare team in March and I can't wait. Her role will be a far cry from her days writing the music/cutlure reviews in Real, but it will be a blast working in a more "grown up" context now.
We're all still kids figuring this thing out. But it sure is fun!

Heated Meetings
Coming off of the "high" from last Friday's meeting, we had a follow-up pow wow this morning. Today was much shorter and very helpful toward solidifying details. I love it when things get heated in meetings because it means passion is coming out and people are believing in what they're saying. There were a few heated moments today when everybody squirmed a bit, especially me. I hate conflict but I love its outcomes.
It's times like these when you're grateful for a team that loves each other and wants to work through the tough stuff!

A Personality Day
Spent the majority of today with the Personality team. If you don't know these people, you just have to meet them. They are a crazy fun crew!
We're always refining our service offerings so that we can stay a leader in the cause marketing world. Several months ago we decided to test some of our own "genius" out on the company (us). So today we put ourselves through one of the processes we do for our clients and it was powerful! I think more organizations should be doing this. How do your products, services, promises work for you?
We spent four hours dissecting who we are, what we do, and who we do it for. It was some of the most productive four hours we've spent together in a long time. The results will be seen in subtle and significant ways in the weeks and months ahead.

Meeting of the Minds, NextGen Summit
Spent the last two days at the Anaheim Convention Center meeting with 100 leaders from around the country who are converging together for the Foursquare NextGen Summit later this year (December 29-31, 2007). I made a couple presentations about the communications plan, how we're going to bring 8,000 people together, and what happens when we all get there.
I love that we're all about three causes for this event: poverty, orphans, and human trafficking. Last night we saw a screener of the upcoming April 13 release of the Lion's Gate film Trade with Kevin Kline. Powerful movie!
Being around these leaders (young and old) is energizing. I love it when people catch it and start taking things further than you originally imagined.

Meetings That Go Pow
I spent the whole day hopping from meeting to meeting to phone appointments and back to meetings. I observed three things today about meetings:
1. When scheduling meetings, I always try and cluster them. The tendency is to want to space them out to allow for re-grouping time. When I cluster meetings it keeps my mind flowing and rolling. It also allows for my non-meeting time to also be clustered, resulting in larger periods of productive time. I'd much rather have 90 minutes of non-meeting time than six breaks of 15 minutes each.
2. When you're in a debriefing meeting, processing something that has already happened, it is important to be thinking about how this information applies to what is next. This is especially difficult when you're debriefing something that you are not going to repeat. This was the case today -- I kept asking "how and where can I apply this lesson?"
3. I love it when you're in a meeting and an idea is shared that everybody gives a "wow" to. It's that moment when you realize that one statement/idea was worth the whole meeting. It's important to look for those moments, and the sooner they happen the better. The energy that zaps everybody else is contagious and often spurs on the rest of the participants.
By the way, I really dislike meetings.

CFCC, Smart?
I was mildly amused to see that earlier this week the Center for Church Communication made the list for one of the 59 smartest organizations online. The list is put out by Seth Godin's Squidoo and a couple of other organizations.
I didn't think much of the recognition until talking with Josh Cody this morning. Josh made an obvious but overlooked point. The fact that mainstream media has acknowledged a "church thing" as smart is quite a statement. We didn't start CFCC to be seen as smart or even gain the attention of media. We started it to elevate the conversation about church communication so that churches would get better at telling the Story.
Many thanks to the CFCC community for being so smart -- now don't let it get to your head!

Job Openings
Between Personality™ and Foursquare, I have a few job openings on my teams. Both teams are completely different, but they share the same cruel boss.
Personality is looking for a project director to replace our existing one who is leaving prematurely due to the news that her sister is in the advanced stages of cancer.
Foursquare is looking for two people, an art director and copywriter.
If you know of anybody who would be a good fit, send them our way. Thanks!

Hiring Process
Had breakfast today with James Craft, following up with details for the Foursquare NextGen Summit event next year. I was telling James about the new hire I just made to come on and support the event from an administrative perspective. While filling him in on the details of the new team member, I was also explaining some of my philosophy for hiring. In general, I try to always:
- Hire up. I like to find people that are better/smarter/faster than me.
- Hire trouble makers. I prefer people that will take the ball and run, not stand back and wait for the pass to come. This almost always results in people that stir up trouble, but I'd much rather clean up a few messes than spend my time trying to get people to work.
- Hire strengths, manage weaknesses. I'm all about playing to people's strengths. This often results in people who are not well balanced. The designer who designs well, but is bad with deadlines. The project manager who is a detail monster but is not good with people. It's much easier for me to manage a weakness when I know the strengths are being lived out large.
While this is not my definitive hiring process, these are some key components for me.

National New Church Conference
Got invited to tag-team the creative communications pre-conference with Mark Batterson at the 2007 National New Church Conference in Orlando next April 23-26. I love hanging out with pastors, especially church plant pastors. It's probably for the same reason I am drawn to small business upstarts and movies like Rudy. I just love the underdog.
And boy to I feel like the underdog with Batterson! It should be a lot of fun in April.

Foursquare NextGen Summit '07
I flew up to Oakland this morning (got back tonight) to have lunch with James Craft, the national youth director for Foursquare. James is also the next gen pastor for East Bay Fellowship in Danville, California (just outside of San Francisco). They have a five million dollar facility -- just for youth -- that is way cool. We spent a couple hours getting to know each other, as well as going over the communications strategy for an event next year called Foursquare NextGen Summit '07. The theme is "imagine" and, if the event looks anything close to what is being imagined, I can't wait.
I love being a part of the planning teams for things like this. It's where my heart really starts pumping. I presented James with a 12-month communications/marketing plan that left both of us feeling about six months behind, and at the same time more pumped than ever.
Imagine 8,000 students converging over New Year's 2007 right next door to Disney Land in Anaheim...

MinistryCOM, Willow
I flew to Chicago last night after spending Friday night through Sunday morning at a church retreat with three hundred other young adults this weekend up in the mountains (Lake Arrowhead).
I met this afternoon in Chicago with the planning committee for the 2007 MinistryCOM, an annual event for church communication junkies. Next year's event in Nashville (September 13-14), should be another winner.
The highlight of my trip was having lunch with Paul Braoudakis, director of communications for the Willow Creek Association. I met Paul a couple of years ago at Catalyst. Today we got to spend some time talking about a few upcoming projects for the Center for Church Communication. I can't wait to share them with the world!
I am back home in Los Angeles tonight. Whew.

Personality Site Live
![]()
The Personality site is finally up. It's been in development since the beginning of the year, but as is typical with small businesses, we put client work before our own. We had the Personality blog up and running earlier this summer which has been gaining momentum ever since.
I really like what the team did with our site - it's nice to have it back up. It's ridiculous how silly you feel telling people about your company. The excitement fades when people landed at a splash page. But the wait is over... for those of you that were ever waiting. If only.

Look Mom, I'm On the Web

Late last year John Carney from The Wittenburg Door interviewed Kevin Hendricks and me regarding one of our partner projects, Church Marketing Sucks. The interview is online and is basically a word for word transcript with a few comedic elements thrown in by John in his questioning.

Church Marketing Sucks
From the About page of the Church Marketing Sucks blog, a project I've been collaborating on for a few months that just went public:
Frustrate.
Something's wrong with your church. Something's wrong with the Church. Church marketing efforts and communication in general suck. We've got the greatest story ever told, but no one's listening. The church has a problem communicating, and it's time to change.
Educate.
We love the church, but it needs some help. Typos, cheesy logos, and bad clip art aren't helping the cause. But snazzy marketing won't save this ship, either. It's not about being perfect, but there's a better way to communicate. It's authentic, it's loving, and it knows how to spell.
Motivate.
This isn't simply about putting butts in pews or selling glossy postcards. It's about helping the church be the Church, and seeing lives changed as a result. If helping the church communicate better allows one person to finally glimpse the Gospel, then our work has been worthwhile. It may be fuzzy math, but God can worry about that.

Church Marketing Sucks
Today one of my companies unofficially launched ChurchMarketingSucks.com. The official launch will come later this year, but for now we're working out the bugs and kinks as well as the design. The whole idea is to "frustrate, educate, and motivate" church leaders in the ways they communicate with people. I'm excited to be working with writing guru Kevin Hendricks, who dates back to the Real magazine days and is perhaps one of the original bloggers in existence before the word "blog" was ever a part of our vocabulary. Kevin is helping out with several "company" items in the hopper; this is only the beginning.
