Pangea Day is May 10

I bumped into the story of Jehane Noujaim when I saw that she won the TED Prize wish a couple years ago. Jehane's dream is to see people around the world share the same film experience at the same time. The idea has grown into a giant global project called Pangea Day and it's happening Saturday, May 10.

4 hours. 7 languages. 24 films. Wow.

Watching TV Evolve

TelevisionAnybody that knows me is aware that I'm not much of a television watcher. Growing up I never really did get into it. I wish I could tell you that instead I was out roughing it in the wild or building sand castles or getting in touch with my inner-man. Instead I was off doing geeky entrepreneurial things and tinkering with tech stuff.

Television is such a time sucker which is why Jamaica and I don't subscribe to cable or satellite service. Perhaps the reason we like movies so much is because there is a clear start and stop time.

Because the worlds I work in rely so much on mass communication mediums, television is certainly something I keep an eye on, especially as it continues to evolve. I've been particularly interested in Joost and the recently launched Hulu. Both approach online TV and movies in similar ways, although Hulu definitely has better interface in my opinion.

I'm also curious about Sky Angel's announcement in February about converting entirely to IPTV--a first in the industry. The simplicity and convenience of connecting a little black box to the internet (much like an IP phone) and then out to a TV is very intriguing.

August Rush

2007_12_14_AugustRush.JPGThis past weekend Jamaica and I saw the movie August Rush. What a delightful find! I had no idea what it was about when I sat down to watch it--we were going based on the strong recommendation of Jamaica's sister--so what a pleasant surprise it was. The soundtrack was so good I bought it and have been listening to it the last couple days.

This is one of those movies where the music is just as much a part of the movie as the story itself. In the case of August Rush, the music is actually the story as a boy attempts to bring his parents--whom he has never met--together.

The only problem I have with this movie is that it is once again a slap in the face to my lack of any real talent. Child prodigy stories always bug me because I can't relate and I want to so bad. Perhaps that's why I should begin counseling next week for my pride, selfishness, jealousy and arrogance.

Sunday Paper

2007_09_16_LATimes.jpgEvery once in a while Jamaica and I get up on a Sunday morning and head to Starbucks for a morning drip and the Sunday paper. Wait a minute, isn't this something that "old" people do? And who still reads the paper?

One of the reasons why newspapers and magazines will always be around is that they fulfill our need to "filter." Reminds me of the book by Lisa Johnson when she suggests that one of the cravings of Gen X and Y is help to sort and sift through all of the clutter. The reason we like printed things are because they narrow the focus for us.

Having the world's information at my fingertips is incredible. When someone sorts and sifts through information and presents it in a way that I can digest, it is powerful.

This is also why I like blogs.

The opportunity for both print and digital filters will continue to expand. Audience sizes will shrink but the amount of filters will continue to grow. And the bond between filterer and filteree will continue to morph and mingle into complex and codependent relationships.

Are Blogs a Fad?

Randall Rothenberg, author and longtime journalist, argues in the November 8, 2004 issue of Advertising Age that the power of blogs have been greatly exaggerated.

"Blogs are this year's fad," he says, adding that bloggers have about as much sway "as your average op-ed columnist."

Admittedly, Rothenberg says he has only participated in the "sport" of blogging for a "short two months."

The real test for blogs will be in the long term, but I do agree with Rothenberg's closing comment: "The medium isn't the message. The message is the message."

American Family Association, Getting Worse

In the October 25, 2004 issue of Advertising Age, the industry mag for the ad world, a cover story read "Christian Group Spooks Advertisers." Writer Jack Neff gives a great report about the influence The American Family Association is having with their mission to "change the culture to reflect Biblical truth."

Although the AFA has had some impact on a few advertisers (Lowes, Tyson Foods, Kellogg, and others), the reality, according to AFA president Tim Wildmon, is that "...no, we have not succeeded. Things have only gotten worse over the past 25 years."

I applaud the efforts of the AFA, but I'm not quite sure they make sense.

Saved, No Mother Teresa

I just got back from seeing Saved, surprisingly still in theaters considering it has done just over 8 million dollars in the domestic box office as of yesterday according to Box Office Mojo. I didn't take my wife because she thought it would be a mockery of God and everything holy, not to mention she was having a mother/daughter dinner with several of her friends and their mothers.

Fahrenheit 911... Uncut?

I took the day off work today; we have a Kiwi friend from New Zealand in town and Jamaica's mom is arriving tomorrow. I mentioned the idea of seeing the new Michael Moore film, Fahrenheit 911, and was vetoed immediately. "I am not seeing that movie!" were the words from my open-minded, culturally relevant, politically astute wife. My intention, I assured her, was not to go Bush-bashing with the rest of the moviegoers, but to be aware of what is being suggested or propagated so that our response to it will be informed; not fed from right wing talk show hosts or people who wear swastikas.

I caught a little bit of Good Will Hunting last night. This is such a fine movie loaded with depth and conversation. I love Will's response to the NSA agent wanting to hire him. The NSA agent just gets done going over the reasons why Will should work for them, and ends with the reverse question, "Why shouldn't you work for the NSA?"

Hey Me: Take a Chill Pill

I need to learn how to rest. For the last 38 hours, I had nothing that needed to be accomplished. My wife is out of town. I had no looming deadlines. No house to clean (already done). No laundry to wash (the basket just isn't full enough). Of course there are plenty of things on my "get-a-round-to-it" list, but for all intents and purposes, my time was officially free; a rarity that occurs about as often as Hailey's Comet. So I decided to use my time unlike I ever had before and did nothing. This is hard for me. I'm a thinker, a dreamer, a planner. I'm the guy who thinks about the next big thing to tackle in life and then get depressed because I find other people doing it better than I ever could.
